Vocal Warm-Ups for Choirs: 8 Exercises That Work for Groups
Warming up a choir is a different job from warming up one voice: you’re managing forty bodies, four sections, mixed experience levels and limited rehearsal time. These eight exercises — in this order — get a group warm, focused and blended in about ten minutes.
1. Physical reset (1 minute)
Everyone stands, shakes out hands, rolls shoulders, gently massages the jaw, and yawns. Choirs arrive carrying the day — commutes, desks, stress. One minute of body work buys you better sound for the whole rehearsal.
2. Synchronised breathing (1 minute)
Breathe together: in for four counts (ribs wide, shoulders still), hiss out on “sss” for eight. Repeat, extending the exhale to twelve. Breathing together is also the first ensemble skill — it teaches the group to feel a shared pulse.
3. Unison hum (1 minute)
Hum a comfortable mid-range note together on “mmm”. Listen for the moment the sound fuses into one. Move the note up and down by step. This is the cheapest blend exercise that exists.
