The 5-Minute Vocal Warm-Up (With a 10-Minute Version)
No time is the number-one excuse for skipping warm-ups — so here’s a warm-up with no excuse left. Five minutes, no equipment, safe for first thing in the morning. Do it before every practice, rehearsal or karaoke night.
The 5-minute vocal warm-up
Minute 1: Body and breath
Roll your shoulders back twice, unclench your jaw, then take four slow, silent breaths that expand your lower ribs sideways. Shoulders stay down. This is the on-switch for everything that follows.
Minute 2: Humming
Hum gently on “mmm” around your comfortable speaking pitch. Feel the buzz on your lips and nose. Slide up and down a small range — the size of a wave, not a mountain.
Minutes 3–4: Lip trills
Flutter your lips on “brrr” and glide from low to high and back, like a slow siren. Go a little higher each pass, but stay light. If your lips won’t flutter, press a fingertip into each cheek, or switch to “ng” sirens (the end of the word “sing”).
