Teach Yourself to Sing: A Realistic 30-Day Starter Plan
Can you really teach yourself to sing? Yes — millions of self-taught singers prove it. What you can’t do is teach yourself with random videos and no plan. Self-teaching works when it has structure, feedback and consistency. Here’s a realistic 30-day plan that provides all three.
What you need (all free or nearly)
- A phone that records audio (your feedback loop)
- A free piano app (your pitch reference)
- 15–20 minutes a day, ideally the same time each day
- Somewhere you’re okay sounding imperfect — car, shower, bedroom, anywhere
Week 1: Breath and first sounds
Goal: low, silent breathing and a relaxed first tone.
- Daily: 5 min breathing (rib expansion + hissing exhales — log your hiss time), 5 min gentle humming and lip trills, 5 min singing anything you love, easy volume.
- Day 1 task: record 30 seconds of a song you like. Don’t judge it — archive it. This is your “before”.
Week 2: Pitch
Goal: land notes on purpose.
- Daily: 3 min breath, 4 min warm-up, 8 min pitch matching — play a note, sing it, verify; slide onto notes you miss; slow do-re-mi with checking.
- End-of-week task: record “Happy Birthday” slowly. Listen once, note where it drifts, shrug, continue. Drift you can hear is drift you’ll fix.
Week 3: Range and tone
Goal: comfortable notes, pleasant sound.
