How to Find Your Vocal Range (Beginner Guide + Voice Chart)
Your vocal range is the span from the lowest note you can sing clearly to the highest — and knowing it changes everything: which songs suit you, which keys to sing in, and how to train without strain. Here’s how to find yours in about five minutes, no experience required.
What you’ll need
Any piano — a real one, a keyboard, or a free piano app on your phone. That’s it. Warm up your voice gently first with a minute of humming and lip trills so you get a true reading.
Step 1: Find your lowest note
Sing a comfortable “ah” in your normal speaking area, find that note on the piano, then walk down one key at a time, matching each note. Your lowest usable note is the last one that comes out clearly — not the frog-croak below it. Write it down (e.g. G2, C3).
Step 2: Find your highest note
Return to your comfortable note and walk upward key by key on a light “ah” or “oo”. You’ll likely feel a shift into a lighter register (head voice) — keep going, that counts. Stop at the highest note you can sing cleanly without pushing or pain. Write it down.
